Guidance

  • There is access to potable water in the community; 

  • There is access to electricity; 

  • There is access to sewage disposal (i.e. sewage containers); 

  • There is access to waste disposal (i.e. community dump). 

Additional Information 

Standards

Sanitary facilities - Facilities are clean, safe, properly maintained, and meet international standards.

Drinking water - Workers should have access to an adequate supply of potable drinking water and alternative sources should be provided in case of contamination.

Electricity - Workers should have access to, at the minimum, basic power use.

Beds and furnishings - All foreign migrant workers who are living in dormitories arranged by the company, are provided with all necessary furnishings, which includes a bedframe and mattress. Under no circumstances should workers be expected to share beds, sleep on a mattress on the floor, or sleep on the bare floor.

Sample questions to guide you when assessing the Unit of Assessment against the standard

  • Do workers have access to the following while at work: 

    • Potable water   

    • Electricity  

    • Sanitary facilities 

  • For those workers provided with housing: Do workers have access to the following in their housing or dormitories?

    • Potable water   

    • Electricity  

    • Sanitary facilities

      • Are there separate sanitary facilities for men and women?

      • Can sanitary facilities be locked from the inside?

  • Are there separate sleeping quarters for men and women? If no, please explain.
